The Proposal

November 10, 2018

I had gotten all dressed up for a blog shoot with my friend Nicole. I picked her up and we headed to James Turrell’s Skyspace where the shoot was taking place. Following the blog shoot, I had plans to go directly to a holiday party that my (now) husband’s family was hosting.

I remember arriving to the shoot super on edge. A few friends that were invited to the holiday party were getting skeptical that Usman might actually be proposing to me at this “holiday party”. A couple of them even jokingly asked me, “omg are we going to your engagement party?”. That’s when I started questioning everything and tried putting some of the clues together in my head. I really had no idea up until that point and it was just a few days before the event.

Anyways, back to the shoot. I was super on edge thinking WHAT IF he’s actually proposing and this blog shoot is just a cover up.. or what if I’m just being crazy and we’re actually just here to shoot content. We meet up with the photographer @miranwarstudios and start shooting photos.

Shortly after he snapped a few photos, speakers go off to a very significant song. Latch by Disclosure ft. Sam Smith. That’s when my heart dropped and I knew exactly what was happening. I look up and there’s a flash mob that breaks out to the song and I immediately burst into tears. Looking back at the proposal video, I really need to work on looking and sounding a little more decent when crying LOL.

They are dancing in front of a structure that has a cover over it. Halfway into the song, Usman comes from behind the screen wearing the same mask as the dancers. He joins them in the dance and there I am just watching - continuing my ugly crying. The dance comes to an end and he takes his mask off, two of the dancers run up to me, grab my hands, and bring me towards Usman. Adrenaline was rushing through me and I was doing my best to process everything that was happening.

I reach Usman and as he takes my hand, the curtains drop on the structure. That’s when I saw he recreated the “before I die” wall where he initially asked me to be his girlfriend 4.5 years before. With way too many tears in my eyes, I read, “Before I die: Ask Madiha Jamil to marry me”. He got on his knee and I screamed yes <3

Our family and my best friends then popped out of now where, we took a few photos, and then made our way to the “holiday” turned engagement party with our family & closest friends!

It was one of the best and most memorable days of my entire life. Beyond grateful for such a loving and thoughtful husband that planned such a perfect proposal <3
